do you know who your’e voting for in November?
Dear Beholder,
Music of Choice: We Are the Champions by Queen
All major party candidates for the November 2024 General Election have been selected.
After a historic decision from Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 Presidential race, new faces have begun to emerge, not necessarily to the world of politics but rather the public is being introduced to public figures who have been very vocal about the trajectory of the United States as a whole.
With such a high-stakes election coming up in a few short months, all presidential candidates and their respective running mates must be discussed candidly so that voters can cast their votes confidently. Especially when some voters will participate in early voting. So, who exactly is on the ballot?
Kamala Harris has been certified as the Democratic party nominee after earning the majority of roll call votes. The Democratic National Convention will take place starting August 19, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois. It is here that Harris will likely be announced as the official nominee and be able to speak to the party directly.
Harris, 59, has previously served as a Prosecutor in California, which is a major talking point in her campaign. She has also served as a Senator, showing that she is more than qualified for the job after serving as Biden’s Vice President for the past four years.
On August 6, 2024, Harris finally selected a running mate who will serve alongside her as Vice President. Tim Walz is the current governor of Minnesota. He is a 60-year-old Democrat who has previously served as a schoolteacher and congressman. During his time as Governor, Walz has signed several progressive initiatives into law. He has strengthened gun control, expanded paid medical leave, introduced universal free school meals, as well as law protections for abortion access ensuring that those seeking or providing abortions do not face legal consequences. Notably, he also acquired more funding to hire additional criminal prosecutors and legalized recreational marijuana use for the state.
Some of the initiatives that Harris has outlined in her campaign are that she will lower drug costs, forgive student loan debt, focus on the economy, and prioritize initiatives that will help citizens get ahead. Along with the initiatives that the Biden administration enacted, Harris plans to continue to advocate for climate and environmental justice, setting a goal to reduce U.S. climate pollution by 2035, as set forth by the Paris Climate Agreement. She has heavily emphasized freedom – that she will work to protect and reinstate the rights of many Americans that have been taken. There are several clips of her during speeches urging voters to get out and vote as there is a choice between “two visions for the future of America.” One that is defined as progressive, and the other, as a threat to democracy.
Harris has been rather quiet on the issue of immigration and foreign policy but plans to increase the number of Border Patrol agents.
Support for Harris has shined a light on the election. Many Democrats are discussing a resurgence of hope. This is evidenced by the record-breaking donations to the Harris campaign just hours after being endorsed by President Biden.
The official Republican Nominee for President is Donald J. Trump. Trump, 78, was nominated and accepted at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was soon after this that Trump announced his running mate, JD Vance, a newly elected Senator from Ohio. Vance is also a published author of the book “Hillbilly Elegy.” It should also be noted that Vance is the youngest of all the major party candidates for President and Vice President at 40 years old.
Trump wants to rid the Department of Education and let the States control education. The Republican party has previously vowed to use federal power to stop gender-affirming care for minors and the administration has considered officially defining gender as an unchangeable biological condition determined at birth, making it impossible to change genders in the eyes of the law. Trump has also stated that he will cut regulations for the environment, including emission and pollution rules. He claims this is stifling job creation. He opposes taxpayers funding abortions and does not want there to be student loan forgiveness.
Vance during his time as Senator has helped lead a rail safety bill across party lines after the East Palestine train derailment, which has not yet been up for the Senate vote.
Lastly, due diligence would not have been done if Project 2025 was not discussed. Project 2025 is a nearly 900-page manifesto that goes into explicit detail about how Republicans would strip rights from Americans, starting with giving the President unprecedented power and dismantling the federal government. Trump has denied any connection with the document however, it has been found that several members of his staff are a part of its creation. Universal Karma urges voters to read the document. https://static.project2025.org/2025_MandateForLeadership_FULL.pdf
