death and addressing the obvious

Dear Beholder,

Music of Choice: Requiem by Khamari

I have been thinking a lot about death lately. Not in a concerning way, truly, one of my professors is to blame. I was sitting in class when I heard the words:

“Death is the one thing that we are all promised in this life… It’s the one thing that we as humans actively avoid talking about.”

Now this, this is poetic. I started thinking a lot about death after that point. It was true, we all know that we are going to die one day, we don’t know the day or way, but it will happen.

If you were to die tomorrow, are you happy with what you’ve done in your life so far? My answer? Absolutely not. I have had my fair share of accomplishments, but there is so much that is on the bucket list that I have not done yet (that are a must!). On the other hand, I have lived a blessed life and have had the privilege of experiencing what others wish they had the opportunity to.

In addition to this horrifying revelation, I realized that death has this way of uniting people. It also has a way of dividing people. This might a little philosophical, but death brings up subconscious emotions by making you face reality. The loss of a loved one can disrupt existing dynamics, unearth unresolved past conflicts, and grief is along for the ride.

In terms of pop culture, the first time I remember a person’s death having such a profound impact on the world, was the death of Michael Jackson. I was young but I remember sitting in front of the TV as the news stations reported it. Of course, there have been a plethora of vocalists that have passed over time and their deaths, just the same have demonstrated that music transcends boundaries, languages, and belief systems. Whitney Houston, Elvis Presley, Tupac, Amy Winehouse, the list goes on.

Candidly, it is the reason that I chose to add the Music of Choice to your letter. I think that music has a way of depicting a message that I don’t think simple words can perfectly describe.

I don’t really have a point. Take from this what you will.

Best wishes & all the love,

Universal Karma
